France: Former surgeon goes on trial on child rape and assault charges

A retired French surgeon has gone on trial accused of raping and sexually assaulting small children.

Joël Le Scouarnec, 69, is billed with abusing his two nieces, a neighbour’s daughter and a affected individual. But prosecutors suspect he may perhaps have abused as numerous as 349 youngsters amongst 1989 and 2017.

He has admitted assault but denied the rape costs.

The trial in the south-western city of Saintes is the start off of what could be France’s most significant paedophilia scandal.

If discovered responsible, Mr Le Scouarnec faces up to 20 yrs in prison.

Mr Le Scouarnec was arrested in 2017 soon after his neighbour’s daughter experienced informed her family members about the alleged assault.

Investigators stated they afterwards searched his residence, getting photos of youngster abuse and a notebook detailing his sexual assaults.
