A newly identified fossil hen could be the earliest acknowledged ancestor of every hen on the planet.

Residing just ahead of the asteroid strike that wiped out big dinosaurs, the special fossil, from about 67 million decades back, gives a glimpse into the dawn of modern day birds.

Birds are descended from dinosaurs, but precisely when they progressed into birds like the types alive today has been tough to answer.

This is because of to a deficiency of fossil information.

The newly learned – and effectively-preserved – fossil skull must assist fill in some of the gaps.

“This is a exceptional specimen: we’ve been contacting it the ‘wonderchicken’,” explained Dr Daniel Discipline of the College of Cambridge.

“It is the only approximately full cranium of a contemporary fowl that we have, so much, from the age of dinosaurs and it can be ready to notify us fairly a lot about the early evolutionary heritage of birds.”

The fossil hen has been named Asteriornis maastrichtensis, after Asteria, a Greek goddess of slipping stars who turns into a quail, and the town of Maastricht in Belgium, the place it was uncovered.
