Power business Drax is to cease burning coal at its North Yorkshire power station – the moment a single of western Europe’s most important polluters – from March 2021.

It says it will then shut its two coal models in September 2022 with the loss of 230 jobs at the web-site close to Selby.

The move arrives ahead of a federal government ban on coal-fired electric power in 2025.

Drax claimed it had held conversations with the Countrywide Grid, the regulator and the federal government ahead of deciding to close business coal technology.

“Ending the use of coal at Drax is a landmark in our continued endeavours to transform the small business and turn into a planet-primary carbon negative corporation by 2030,” stated main govt Will Gardiner.
