Cigarette leads police to Florida cold case murder suspect

Police took DNA evidence from a cigarette butt that Daniel Wells threw out of his motor vehicle

DNA evidence from a discarded cigarette has led Florida law enforcement to arrest a male on suspicion of murdering a female 35 yrs back.

Daniel Wells, 57, was arrested and billed in Pensacola previously this week for the murder of Tonya McKinley.

Ms McKinley was observed strangled and sexually assaulted on New Year’s Day in 1985, leaving driving a child son.

Her situation has absent unsolved, but law enforcement say DNA from a general public databases joined Mr Wells to her murder in Pensacola.

“I failed to really know if this [arrest] would at any time come about,” Ms McKinley’s sister, Renee, explained to NBC News. “I did not really think this would occur in my life time, not after 35 many years.”
